MOTA Day 2010
The twenty first
anniversary of Museums of the Arroyo (MOTA) Day promises to be special,
and The Gamble House Visitors are welcome to tour the house, enjoy cookies and lemonade on the lawn and visit a children’s craft table. Heritage Square Museum Visitors can observe a Spanish American War encampment, watch traditional woodcarvers and blacksmiths at their work, visit a vintage doll display, listen to historical storytellers, hear live music, and much more. Children are encouraged to play with Victorian games and make period crafts throughout the day as well. In addition, guests can meet ‘suffragettes’ joining MOTA Day in anticipation of the museum’s exhibition in June celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Women’s Suffrage movement. Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum Visitors can tour the station, which showcases private collections and historical memorabilia dating back to the late 1800s, and use their own cameras to create “Booking Photos” of their favorite ‘crook’ in the historic jail. Outdoors, visitors of all ages – from toddlers to senior citizens – can climb into a retired police helicopter…and even try on police gear. This year, the museum will also pay tribute to the first policewoman in the United States – Alice Stebbins Wells, who joined the LAPD on September 12, 1910. John Buntin, bestselling author of LA Noir, will also be on hand to celebrate Museums of the Arroyo Day. Lummis Home and Garden Tours of the Lummis Home and self-guided garden tours will be available throughout the day. Pasadena Museum of History For MOTA Day, the Pasadena Museum of History will pay tribute to a very special “woman in early Los Angeles” when it presents “Pasadena Patron: The Life and Legacy of Eva Scott Fenyes," one of early Pasadena’s most prominent and influential women. Themes covered in this special exhibition include Fenyes family history; Eva as an art patron and watercolorist; the influence of Europe, the East Coast, and travel itself on her thinking; and the social milieu Eva created in Pasadena. Exhibition highlights will include items from the Fenyes collection never before on public display. In addition, Walter and Sheila Nelson, Cultural Historians in Residence, will present a program in the Giddings Room called “Mind your Manners” on etiquette and social customs of the early 1900s while Ian Whitcomb and the Bungalow Boys will play music from the early 1900s in the garden at 1:00 and 3:00 pm. Dancing is encouraged! Please note: the Fenyes mansion itself is currently closed for renovation.
